New Look, Same Great… Taste?

In Off-Topic on October 11, 2012 at 11:38 am

Regular visitors of my site, or at least the particularly astute observers among them, will doubtless notice that every last thing about the way it looks has changed.

This is more or less a trial run. I was somewhat less-than-jazzed about the old look of the site, so I wanted to try something lighter and simpler, something that keeps the focus on the words instead of on all the dark colors and such, and moves more stories to the top. It came down to two choices, and in the end, this one won out.

Personally, I think this is a swell theme, but before I make the change permanent, I’m interested in hearing what you think. To that end, I’d be much obliged if you reg’lars (and even you not-so-reg’lars) would comment, email me or send messenger pigeons to let me know what you think.

Do you have a site of your own? If so, what theme do you use and what you like most about it?

  1. In case my pigeon gets lost en route…
I like the plainer style of this new one but I don’t know if it’s not too plain for my tastes. A picture is a nice opener for any blog and especially when you want people to recognise you, it’s nice to have something unique about your theme as well as nice clean lines. One of the things I *don’t* like about my current theme (I know, that’s not what you asked) is that it just uses the standard picture – it’s a nice picture but I’m sure I’m one of a million writing blogs with a bookshelvef at the top of the page. Just a suggestion, but is there a way to add an image or logo to this nice clean shiny new style of yours?

    • Thanks for commenting! You’re right, the visual aspect is important, and I definitely think it works best if there’s a strong feature image for each story (like there is now for “It’s only a story.” I think, if I dig into CSS there’s an option to customize a header Image, I would just need to find one that was simple and consistent with the style. (You may even be able to do that with yours, now that I think of it – there should be some sort of custom header image option anyway). Thanks again – I appreciate your input!

  2. Clean. Simple. Elegant. Animated. What’s not to like. As a veteran graphic artist my recommendation is: stick with this.

    • Thank you – that’s exactly the kind of feedback I need (I don’t consider myself much of a design guy, so all kinds of outside perspective is helpful).

      • My pleasure. You may not be a design guy but you have a good eye for nice clean design. nice choice…

  3. What I am liking with this new look is the title, it stands OUT. I’m also digging the lack of sidebar. No clutter, easier to focus. I may have to give that a shot, if my theme allows it.

    • Haha, it doesn’t just stand out, it kind of attacks you. But I did like the clean aspect, nothing to distract, just 3 stories right up front. Thanks!

  4. […] and criticism! Also, in case you haven’t noticed, I’ve revamped the look of my site, so I’d love to hear what you think about that, too. Happy weekend, everyone! Like this? Share it:FacebookTwitterDiggRedditStumbleUponLike […]
