Summer

Responsibility

is the artifice of adulthood.

We are industrious

in our pursuit of complication—

of noble strife.

Promotions, office drama, coffee preferences,

scraping cents.

But summer

is the soul’s breath.

Sunlight.

Earth.

For this weekend’s Trifextra Challenge we were asked for 33 words on what Summer means to us. Obviously I’m still pining for the days when summer vacation actually meant there was nothing to worry about. That concept is either incredibly profound or incredible uninspired, and I’m not sure which.

Head on over to Trifecta to see what other people had to say about it.

Happy Friday and, of course, happy summer!

  1. And looking out that office window, trying to think up an official excuse for a walking meeting… I voted for your Trifectra entry last night. It was such strong writing.

  2. “We are industrious

    in our pursuit of complication—”

Oh, how true, and how sad, sometimes. I miss the letting go that summertime induces…

  3. YES! Exactly this. I love this. Summer always feels like a vacation for me. From something. Thanks for linking up. Don’t forget to come back and vote.

  4. Brian, you’ve taken the daily and moved to the global – all in 33 words. As adults, vacations do take on a different role for us, don’t they? I love the philosophy, your philosophy, in this. :)))

  5. “Summer is the soul’s breath.” Beautiful line. Great piece, overall!!! 🙂

  6. summer is the soul’s breath

  8. “Summer is the soul’s breath” takes my breath away. Great contrasts, lovely piece.

  9. summer is my “spring” in many ways, I find that Summer is my soul’s breath, it allows me to keep going, to keep living.

what a lovely piece on “growing up”

  10. Just gorgeous Brian! Love “summer is the soul’s breath” too. Nice reminder to bring balance to our lives.

  11. True true.

  12. Deep. I mean really. No sarcasm. I love those last four lines…

  13. “pursuit of complication” so true! summer is that time of year when you can let out that breath and enjoy life for what it should be

  14. Very poignant… summer is freedom even for grown-ups at least a little.

  15. “We are industrious

    in our pursuit of complication”

Yes. <—If I could gif that I would.

  16. soul’s breath – nice.
